Other reviews for the Medi-Dyne CoreStretch Exerciser have been glowing. I’m happy for these owners, but I am not as enthused. The device will help to stretch the back and shoulders, even the hamstrings, but after the first few basic recommended stretches, it is mostly a matter of repetition even though the instruction sheet illustrates different “advanced” stretches. For this reason I think it is very overpriced; hence my mediocre rating. If the device were $30.00 rather than $60.00, I’d rate it somewhat higher.

Stretches or exercises that help back pain?
There is a constant pinch halfway up my back (a few inches below my left shoulderblade) which I attribute to hours of band back pain exercises practice with a sousaphone on. I always stretch and warm up every day before I ever put it on. I don't doubt that the first thing that falters when marching for so long is my posture and I suppose that contributes to my back problem. What else can I do to help ease the pain in my back, and prevent this from happening in the future?

      The neck (cervical spine) is composed of vertebrae which begin in the upper torso and end at the base of the skull. The bony vertebrae along with the ligaments (like thick rubber bands) provide stability to the spine. The muscles allow for support and motion.

      What Causes Neck Pain?

      Many patients seek orthopedic care for neck pain, because orthopedists are specifically trained in the workings of the musculoskeletal system, including the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of problems involving the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons. While some orthopedists confine their practices to specific areas of the musculoskeletal system, most treat a wide variety of diseases, injuries and other conditions, including neck pain.

      In some cases, neck pain is caused by emotional stress. Most patients are treated successfully with rest, medication, immobilization, physical / massage therapy, exercise, activity modifications or a combination of these methods.

      Massage therapy can include Swedish or Shiatsu massage.       Neck Pain Diagnosis and Treatment

      Very few patients require surgery to relieve neck pain. For the vast majority of patients, a combination of rest, medication, physical and/or massage therapy will relieve neck pain.

      How neck pain is treated depends on what the diagnosis reveals.

      For example, if pain is caused by inflammation as a result of stretching muscles and ligaments beyond their limits (sports, yard work, etc), your doctor may prescribe rest. Should your neck pain stem from an injury caused by a severe jolt or other "impact" accident, you may be also receive a neck collar for a specified period of time, as well as medication to reduce inflammation.

      If medication is prescribed to reduce pain, it should be used only as directed and should not be taken for extended periods of time. In addition, remember that if your orthopedist prescribes rest, it is vital that you follow instructions carefully.

      When neck pain persists or is chronic, your orthopedist may recommend a rehabilitation program that includes an exercise program and various types of physical therapy to help you relieve your pain and prevent it from coming back.

      In some extreme cases you may be referred to an orthopedist.

      An orthopedist is a medical doctor with extensive training in the diagnosis and non-surgical and surgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

      Surgery may be necessary to reduce pressure on the spinal cord or a nerve root when pain is caused by a herniated disk or bony narrowing of the spinal canal. Surgery may also be required following an injury, to stabilize the neck and minimize the possibility of paralysis such as when a fracture results in instability of the neck.

      Determining the source of the pain is essential to recommend the right method of treatment and rehabilitation. Therefore a comprehensive examination is required to determine the cause of neck pain.

      Your orthopedist will take a complete history of the difficulties you are having with your neck. He or she may ask you about other illnesses, any injury that occurred to your neck and any complaints you have associated with neck pain. Previous treatment for your neck condition will also be noted.

      Next, your orthopedist will perform a physical examination. This examination may include evaluation of neck motion, neck tenderness, and the function of the nerves and muscles in your arms and legs.

      X-ray studies often will be done to allow your orthopedist to look closely at the bones in your neck. These simple diagnostic techniques often help orthopedists to determine the cause of neck pain and to prescribe effective treatment.

      Patients who require further evaluation may undergo one or more of the following examinations
      :
      MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). This non X-ray study allows an evaluation of the spinal cord and nerve roots.

      CT (computed tomography). This specialized X-ray study allows careful evaluation of the bone and spinal canal.

      Myelogram (injection of a dye or contrast material into the spinal canal). This specific X-ray study also allows careful evaluation of the spinal canal and nerve roots.

      EMG (electromyogram). This test evaluates nerve and muscle function.

      Your orthopedist may supplement your evaluation with blood tests, and, if necessary, will consult with other medical specialists.

                  Is it better for chronic pain to start exercising and stop, or not exercising at all?
                  I just read an article on Yahoo that says exercise helps with chronic chronic pain pain.                   Chronic pain affects millions of people worldwide. Chronic pain is different than acute pain. Chronic pain is pain that continues long after the original cause.  Chronic pain also has a psychological component that affects every area of one’s life. The challenge of living with chronic pain can create depression, difficulty with family/friend relationships, loss of job, financial losses and a loss of self-worth.

                  During my counseling experiences with individuals living with chronic pain, I have discovered that there are key healthy attitudes that help someone learn how to cope and live with chronic pain.  I teach persons’ with chronic pain how to adopt these attitudes and have had the pleasure of witnessing many reclaim their life again, in spite of chronic pain. 

                  The following are three attitudes that CAN make a difference when living with chronic pain:

                  Optimism – It truly chronic pain does make a difference if you “see the glass half empty” or “half-full”. People that are optimists try to find the positive in all situations. I recently had someone tell me that after their injury, they were able to discover new hobbies because they could no longer do the same hobbies as prior to their injury.  They discovered a hobby that eventually led to a new career. I know it is a challenge to seek the positive in every situation. However, I have seen relationships grow stronger because of pain. I have seen families rediscover what’s really important in their lives. I have seen people “slow down and smell the roses” because of their pain. Part of having an optimistic attitude is also believing that one can go on in spite of pain.

                  Determination - is another healthy attitude. Determination is an attitude that gives someone confidence to carry on. It is the attitude that says “I will not give up”; “I will not allow this pain to take over my life”.  Determination allows one to persevere. It is about finding new ways of doing things and not giving up.  Determination allows one to separate their core self-worth from their pain. Determination is about seeking and finding hope in any situation.

                  Commitment – is the attitude that says, “I am committed to my life and the lives of others”. I will not isolate myself because of my pain. I will allow others to help because it is their gift to me. Commitment is about dedicating one’s self to personal growth.  It is using the experience of pain as a way to allow one’s self to grow spiritually, physically and emotionally. The commitment to others is about trusting in the relationship. It is a trust that creates a special bond in the relationship and determines the depth of the relationship. Living with pain is a great test of relationships.

So the first step in managing your arthritis is to change your diet. I think all health professionals would agree with this.

                              Back Pain Muscle Spasms are no fun. Back Pain is common cause of worry for many people. But it may be occurring because of any type injury to the back.
