Help answer the question about severe back injury
Back injury... would I still be allowed to join Army?
I'm a 20 year old female. About three years ago I suffered a severe lower back injury and had to have surgery to correct it. My back is now fully functional and I can do strenuous activities but I do have mild to moderate daily pain. There is a visible three-inch scar. I went to see a recruiter today about joining the Army severe back injury and he said I could get a tattoo over the scar so the injury wouldn't be discovered during my medical evaluation. Is this ethical? Should I lie about my injury/surgery? If I did admit to my injury, would I be disqualified from joinging the Army or limited in any way in what they would allow me to do?The pain doesn't concern me. I've lived with it so long and I work in construction right now. It might get a little more sore, but I've been training physically for months now so I'd be used to it by the time I enlisted. I know the pain itself won't limit me, I'm just scared of them finding out and limiting me against my will.No lumbar fusion. I fractured my L4 and L5 vertebrae and had a discectomy performed on the L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs.

Help answer the question about lower back pain
How do you relieve lower back pain in your 3rd trimester?
I've been sooo uncomfortable for lower back pain about 2 weeks now. I have lower back pain across the back side of my hips. I know it's just the baby putting pressure on my body, but I can't sleep. How did/do you help the pain?
According to statistics, about three in every four people have experienced lower back pain at least once in their lifetime. Although many can have bouts with back pain, most of these attacks are not really serious. In fact, pain in that area is mostly caused by sprains and overstretching of muscles.
Lower back pain can range from mild to excruciating. If you have experienced the extreme type of ache in your lower back, you will agree that anyone who is suffering from it would be more than willing to drink anything just to ease the pain and be able to alleviate the stiffness. However, the treatment of this condition is actually dependent on the underlying causes. In order for you to get rid of your lower back pain for good, you first need to have an idea of what are the triggers for lower back pain.
Simple Lower Back Problem
Majority of cases of lower back pain fall into this category. Around 19 of the 20 instances of acute lower back problem can also be classified under this type, which is also known as non-specific type.
People usually experience simple back pain due to sprained muscles or ligaments. Many patients experience the pain right after bending or lifting very heavy objects. On the other hand, some feel the pain after a few hours or even days. In some instances, the pain lower back pain can also be caused by slight problems with either the small joints or the disc located in the middle of two vertebrae.
This type of problem usually does not last very long. In fact, patients usually recover or report drastic improvement within 7 to 14 days. Statistics show that in some people, the pain can be dramatically relieved within a month; while in 9 out of 10 cases, the pain can be gone in less than two months. However, many also report recurrences of pain every now and then. Only a small number of cases result to chronic or long-lasting lower back woes.
Cauda Equina Syndrome
This is another underlying reason why people experience extreme aches in their lower back. Although this condition is quite rare, it is important to remember that this can be very serious and usually needs immediate medical attention.
A pinched nerve on the lower part of the spinal cord causes this syndrome. More often than not, this disorder is not only painful, but also impairs bowel and bladder functions. If you experience sudden weakness in one or both of your lower limbs and numbness in the area surrounding your anus, you need to call the doctor immediately. If not properly treated, the affected nerves might be damaged permanently.
Trapped Nerve
An irritated or strained nerve in the spinal cord is the main cause of this type of lower back pain. This can occur in about one for every 20 lower back pain cases. You will know that a nerve in the back is in trouble because you will really feel the ache along the path of the nerve. Usually, patients feel tingling pain or sensation down to the feet and legs. And sometimes, the pain you feel on your leg is much more severe than that on your lower back.
Arthritis
Another culprit for lower back problems is the inflammation of the spine joints. This is more common in elderly people. The most common type of arthritis responsible for such pain is osteoarthritis. However, young people who experience lower back pain due to joint inflammation might be suffering from Ankylosing spondylitis which can cause stiffness in the affected area.
The most common treatment for lower back pain is the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or painkillers combined with exercise and physical therapy. However, if the reason for your back pain is arthritis, you can look for supplements that contain glucosamine sulfate, which has been well documented to help ease arthritic pain and stiffness. One product that can help you alleviate lower back pain and improve your condition naturally is Flexcerin. For more information, visit http://www.flexcerin.com/
| Neuropathic Pain Neuropathic pain is increasingly recognized as a chronic disabling condition. It is frequently thought of as harder to treat than other pain types, and it often results in a poorer quality of life. Around 30% of adults in the UK alone have some type of chronic pain and some estimates suggest that one in five of these will have symptoms of neuropathic pain. This second edition of the popular pocketbook has been fully updated to include recent developments in the diagnosis and management of neuropathic pain. It includes new chapters on the clinical assessment of neuropathic pain and the use of screening tools in its diagnosis. This edition also includes a new chapter focusing on neuropathic lower back pain, a newly emerging clinical entity which is thought to be the most prevalent type of neuropathic pain in developed countries. I have pain after a chiropractic adjustment where there was no pain before?
I went to the chiropractor last Friday after I got so desperate due to my lower back pain that I couldn't take anymore after 2 years of progressively increasing pain. My GP wasn't doing anything but giving me anti inflammatory's and muscle relaxers to help, and they really didn't help at all. They did x-rays and chiropractic for back pain found that my neck has no curve which he believes is a result of the 2 car accidents I have been in and wanted to adjust my neck also even though I have no neck pain. I let him go ahead and adjust it as well. The first visit on Friday worked wonders for my low back pain, it turned out that my sacrum was misaligned and I had no problems from the neck adjustment either. But I had to go back yesterday for a follow up and got another adjustment. My back feels amazing but this evening I started getting pain shooting down my right arm and am having tingling in my fingers. Is this normal? Or did the chiropractor mess my neck up when there was no real problem to begin with? I'm not scheduled to go back until Wednesday but I'm wondering if I need to call them tomorrow.

This is hard and uncomfortable to say the least BUT it works. If you can get past the pain when you are laying on the True Back you can find relief (at least that is the way it happened for me).
Getting on is not too bad because you can just lay back but getting off, I have to roll off. I still cannot stay on the recommended amount of timebut the stretch is worth the pain.

Pain in the lower back or low back pain is a common concern, affecting up to 90% of Americans at some point in their lifetime. Lower back pain can be triggered by a number of factors. A disorder in the spine is not the only cause of lower back pain. Common causes of back pain involve disease or injury to the muscles, bones, and/or nerves of the spine. Pain arising from abnormalities of organs within the abdomen, pelvis, or chest may also be felt in the back. This is called referred pain. Now, what is the best exercise for lower back pain?

Well, exercises that may help spine pain reduce or prevent low back pain include aerobic exercise, to condition your heart and other muscles, maintain health, and speed recovery; strengthening exercises, focusing on your back, stomach, and leg muscles; and stretching exercises, that will keep your muscles and other supporting tissues flexible and less prone to injury.
Exercise and staying active may do relieve low back pain and help speed up your recovery. Stretching and strengthening your stomach, back, and leg muscles helps make them less susceptible to injury that can cause back pain. Strong stomach, back, and leg muscles also better support your spine, reducing pressure on your spinal discs. In fact, weak muscles are often the root cause of back pain. The muscles of the back, the abdomen, and the buttocks all support the spine. Tese muscles are called the core muscles. Muscles are the spine's main defense against gravity. Strengthening the muscles that support the spine with exercises can prevent, reduce, and even eliminate back pain.
However, exercises that can aggravate back pain and should therefore be avoided include straight leg sit-ups, bent leg sit-ups, leg lifts, lifting heavy weights above the waist, and toe touches while standing.
In looking for the perfect exercise for lower back pain, keep in mind that strong and flexible muscles help maintain proper posture and prevent back strain.

During the interview, he mentions that 1 in 20 children will actually have a stress fracture of the spine and that in most cases, it will not be caused by an injury but instead, by growth spurts and other benign causes. Most often, this occurs in the lower back (the lumbar spine). A stress fracture of the spine that causes back pain in children, if caught early, can be treated effectively. If it is not caught early, the condition will continue to worsen over time and will eventually lead to incapacitating back pain and possibly lead to arthritis of the spine in the future. This is a GREAT little tool for on the go. I go to school and study quite a bit, so my neck is always and forever getting knots in it. This little handy device can be taken on the go, such as in my school bag and i can use it in between classes! The only thing i’m not too crazy about is that it slips easily over clothing. It would be nice if you could have some sort of anti-slip end to it. Otherwise, NO complaints!

Did you know one of the biggest health issues plaguing office workers is lower back pain? Why would this condition most would attribute to lifting heavy objects be such a prominent condition among those working in an office environment? If you are sitting down reading this, look no further than right behind you. Office chairs are not designed to give proper support during use. They are designed to provide a place to sit, however uncomfortably, and at the least cost possible.
Your boss' big comfy chair is more suited to provide adequate support on those long days meeting with current or potential clients, reading through reports, or talking on the phone to a facilities manager in China for two hours. Well guess what, he is the boss so he is entitled to that $2000 chair that massages, heats, cools, and probably dispenses coffee from a tap in the arm. We have all tried to sit up straighter and take the occasional stretch break, but by the lower back ache end of the day, even a Monday, we all find ourselves slouched over our keyboard wondering if 5pm is ever going to come.
I speak of this problem somewhat farcically but it is definitely a real problem throughout the office world. There are all kinds of expensive classes you can take to help with posture and breathing: Tai Chi, Qigong, Alexander technique. While very helpful, these classes are quite expensive and time consuming. Why not fix the problem at its origin? If not, you will have invested all that time and money only to step into that office and sit down in the same uncomfortable chair that started the pain. Something as simple as a lumbar pillow can make a world of difference to an old uncomfortable chair. For the same price as a weekend of breathing exercises and posture techniques you could have a permanent solution to a recurring problem. A well manufactured chair with a built-in lumbar support can turn a long, painful week behind a desk into a long, productive week behind a desk. I am sorry to say a new chair won't make the job any easier, but it will leave you feeling a little more rejuvenated by the time 5 o'clock rolls around.
Of course, one cannot rely on a lumbar support to fix all the problems inherent with slouching at a computer all day. The extra support acts more like a posture aide than a "fix-all". However, think about this: In order to keep correct posture, especially while sitting, your abdominals (along with other key core muscles) must tighten to hold you up. So, while you help minimize your lower back pain, you are also getting a pretty solid abdominal workout. Pretty good deal if you ask me, especially if you spend 4+ hours a day sitting at a desk. That's 20 hours a week you will spend doing mild abdominal and core exercises along with keeping your back straighter and healthier. Bet you wouldn't expect a six pack from crunching numbers all day would you?

It’s worth the money. It’s hard to do anything similar with your own thumbs or hands. The center setting for the balls works well on my neck. Really does help release some of the tension in the muscles. And you have control over the intensity of pressure. The narrow setting for the balls works well squeezing the traps at the top of your shoulders. I had to use the string in order to do that. Worked fine. Glad I bought this contraption. It’s easy to put together and is effective on the areas I care about the most.
Help answer the question about chronic neck pain

The neck (cervical spine) is composed of vertebrae which begin in the upper torso and end at the base of the skull. The bony vertebrae along with the ligaments (like thick rubber bands) provide stability to the spine. The muscles allow for support and motion.
What Causes Neck Pain?
Many patients seek orthopedic care for neck pain, because orthopedists are specifically trained in the workings of the musculoskeletal system, including the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of problems involving the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons. While some orthopedists confine their practices to specific areas of the musculoskeletal system, most treat a wide variety of diseases, injuries and other conditions, including neck pain.
In some cases, neck pain is caused by emotional stress. Most patients are treated successfully with rest, medication, immobilization, physical / massage therapy, exercise, activity modifications or a combination of these methods.
Massage therapy can include Swedish or Shiatsu massage. If you do not have access to a Certified Massage Therapist you can learn to use a variety of massagers to help ease the tension and aches in your muscles caused by stress. Click here to learn more about the beneficial effects of massage.
Neck Pain Diagnosis and Treatment
Very few patients require surgery to relieve neck pain. For the vast majority of patients, a combination of rest, medication, physical and/or massage therapy will relieve neck pain.
How neck pain is treated depends on what the diagnosis reveals.
For example, if pain is caused by inflammation as a result of stretching muscles and ligaments beyond their limits (sports, yard work, etc), your doctor may prescribe rest. Should your neck pain stem from an injury caused by a severe jolt or other "impact" accident, you may be also receive a neck collar for a specified period of time, as well as medication to reduce inflammation.
If medication is prescribed to reduce pain, it should be used only as directed and should not be taken for extended periods of time. In addition, remember that if your orthopedist prescribes rest, it is vital that you follow instructions carefully.
When neck pain persists or is chronic, your orthopedist may recommend a rehabilitation program that includes an exercise program and various types of physical therapy to help you relieve your pain and prevent it from coming back.
In some extreme cases you may be referred to an orthopedist.
An orthopedist is a medical doctor with extensive training in the diagnosis and non-surgical and surgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.
Surgery may be necessary to reduce pressure on the spinal cord or a nerve root when pain is caused by a herniated disk or bony narrowing of the spinal canal. Surgery may also be required following an injury, to stabilize the neck and minimize the possibility of paralysis such as when a fracture results in instability of the neck.
Determining the source of the pain is essential to recommend the right method of treatment and rehabilitation. Therefore a comprehensive examination is required to determine the cause of neck pain.
Your orthopedist will take a complete history of the difficulties you are having with your neck. He or she may ask you about other illnesses, any injury that occurred to your neck and any complaints you have associated with neck pain. Previous treatment for your neck condition will also be noted.
Next, your orthopedist will perform a physical examination. This examination may include evaluation of neck motion, neck tenderness, and the function of the nerves and muscles in your arms and legs.
X-ray studies often will be done to allow your orthopedist to look closely at the bones in your neck. These simple diagnostic techniques often help orthopedists to determine the cause of neck pain and to prescribe effective treatment.
Patients who require further evaluation may undergo one or more of the following examinations
:
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). This non X-ray study allows an evaluation of the spinal cord and nerve roots.
CT (computed tomography). This specialized X-ray study allows careful evaluation of the bone and spinal canal.
Myelogram (injection of a dye or contrast material into the spinal canal). This specific X-ray study also allows careful evaluation of the spinal canal and nerve roots.
EMG (electromyogram). This test evaluates nerve and muscle function.
Your orthopedist may supplement your evaluation with blood tests, and, if necessary, will consult with other medical specialists.

Help answer the question about exercises for low back pain

After 2 days I started feeling pain in my lower back. till now I am feeling that pain but not of that much. Now i always wear the belt while doing exercices. As frequently talk about in my study reviews, low back pain remains a mystery of contemporary health care. It's a very frequent, disabling, and expensive condition which we know fairly little regarding in terms of its causes and successful treatments.
This study was accounted in television and print media, so I believed it was essential to evaluate here. If you have some questions regarding any of my reviews, please contact me.
The objective of this great meta-investigation was to assess the usefulness of exercise therapy in low back pain treatment for adults. Exercise therapy was deliberately classified in this study since a diverse group of intercessions from common physical fitness intercessions to different stretching types and aerobic exercise etiquettes. 61 available reports of accomplished, randomized prohibited trials evaluating an exercise intercession to panacea, no other conventional treatments were incorporated in the study. Patients suffering from acute (12 weeks) low back pain from 12 weeks were incorporated in studies (generally most exercises for low back pain of studies concerned about chronic patients).
The trials estimated given the following imminent:
• there is apparent confirmation as exercise therapy is definitely as efficient as other conventional therapies existing for chronic type of low back pain, even though inconsistent confirms that it's much better
• for having acute lower back pain, exercise aren't most useful than other conventional therapies (please remember that exercise therapy isn't same as suggestion to live active, which is presently a suggested, evidence-based intercession of low back pain)
• there is also some evidence existing for supporting a rating-activity exercise plan for acute lower back pain in professional settings
Conclusions & matter-of-facts:
The study ends that proof from randomized, proscribed trials reveals the fact that exercise therapy is definitely helpful in reducing pain and recovering functional endings in patients having chronic pain in lower back. It shows that clinically vital enhancements are more probable to be seen during healthcare surroundings, implicating that exercise therapy can work better when managed by healthcare provider (you can also check the companion article about strategies for executing exercise therapy intended for low back pain).
It seems spontaneous that exercise might be a proper intercession for lower back pain, given that it's managed by skilled professionals in secure and well-managed environment. It seems to be condition where literature still requires catching up of clinical practice. For this end, I believe more research needed to be intended for the success of combination clinical and physical intercessions frequently used in practice. I believe the lack of obvious data on low back pain treatment is because of not having "clinical reality" in most of the randomized trials.
Most of the physical medicine practitioners unite numerous intercessions for exercising and treating these patients. For studies to imitate benefit of such healing schedules, more extensive trials have to to be executed with this design type.
